Policemen take over model colleges

The Lagos State Police Command has deployed armed Police Officers to all Model Colleges and upgraded Secondary Schools in the state to protect both students and their teachers from incessant kidnappings and other criminal activities targeted at schools.

In his speech during a workshop organized for school administrators at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Ikeja on Thursday, September 7, 2017, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bolaji Salami, said that each of the Model Colleges now has four armed policemen securing it from morning till night, while another four continue the security operation till dawn, making eight Police Officers working on shift basis.

DCP Salami, however, advised the school authorities to report to the Command if the Officers fail to appear at their duty posts. The security tips, which were offered Schools in the State by the Commander, Lagos State Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS), ACP Tunji Disu, included the need for schools to have good fencing to ward off intruders; good communication system and codes; provision of vital information to the relevant security agencies, etc.

Others were good security gadgets such as security alarm, which can be employed in alerting both the students and their teachers to security challenges as well as good relationship with their host communities and security operatives within their localities. Disu unveiled these tips at a security seminar organized for School Principals under the Lagos State Education District III, which took place at Epe on Thursday, September 6, 2017.

When Oriwu Sun visited Lagos State Model College, Igbokuta on Thursday, September 14, 2017, four armed policemen were on guard in front of the school, very close to the highway. They were carrying out stop and search operation while the bush, which had already taking over the school fence, was being cleared.

At the Civil Service Model College, Igbogbo, a Police vehicle was parked at the School gate, confirming the presence of policemen.
