HRM, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, the Ayangbure of Ikorodu, last June, led all the Obas in Ikorodu division to not only sympathize with the management of Primero Limited but also to express their annoyance over the destruction of forty-eight BRT buses at Maryland, Lagos.
The Obas in the entourage were the Ranodu of Imota, Oba Ajibade Agoro; Olubeshe of Ibeshe, Abayomi Ogunsanya; the Obateru of Egbin, Adeoriyomi Oyebo; Regent of Ipakodo, High Chief Rasheed Shitta; Baales, and prominent Chiefs in the palace. They were all there to express their annoyance over the destruction of the buses.
The Managing Director of Primero Limited, Mr. Fola Tinubu, said that repairing the buses would gulp not less them N139million. According to him, the most annoying part of this destruction was that it was not the BRT buses that killed Mr. John, but a SUV car.

In his explanation, the cause of the mayhem was that a Sports Utility Vehicle first hit him before a truck belonging to a bottling company ran over him and he died instantly.
Mr. Tinubu reflected his annoyance by saying that the company employed about two thousand five hundred people in the last six months with the majority of them from Ikorodu. He explained that the company cannot be in business if people continue to destroy their property.
He, therefore, solicited for cooperation among the Obas, Chiefs and the citizens of Ikorodu to ensure the amicable brt5settlement of any issue instead of resorting to mayhem, which could throw them out of business.
The Managing Director revealed that they were trying to put more buses on the road but it is now going to be difficult convincing the Directors to do so because of this misguided rage by citizens.
Fola Tinubu later called for the decentralization of the Nigerian police to make it easier for them to call for the assistance of state police instead of the Federal, which is not answerable to the Governor.
In his own speech, the Oba of Imota, Ajibade Agoro, first condemned the publication in Guardian, which depicted Ikorodu as a violent prone area. He said that he and his colleagues were not happy with the destruction of the BRT buses. He said that, although the incident did not happen in Ikorodu, the benefits being enjoyed through the transport company raised their concerns.
Oba Agoro praised the transport company for starting their business on Ikorodu Road, which has reduced traffic jam on this axis. Ranodu said that instead of destroying the buses, the state Governor and the company should be commended for reaching an agreement that brought about the services.
He also explained that Ikorodu people are very accommodating and not criminally minded people as being touted in the publication. The Monarch appealed to other residents and citizens to be law-abiding in order not to tarnish their image.
brt6Wondering how the company can recoup the losses, he said the amount involved in repairing them was huge. In his words, “We just came here to sympathise with them for the losses,” he stated.
To engage the youth and take their minds off violence, Oba Agoro said that a lot of empowerment programmes had been carried out by the state government and those who represent the division at both state and national levels.
He cited such people as Hon. Babajimi Benson, S.O.B. Agunbiade and Hon. Nurudeen Solaja, recalling also that vocational training was carried out to empower the youth with some getting start-up funds for their chosen vocations.
Oba Kabiru Shotobi gave the vote of thanks, which brought the press briefing to an end. He thanked the company for handling the matter well and assured the management of more unflinching support and patronage.
Meanwhile, the state government has reiterated that it would not hesitate in ridding the state of illegality like street trading and hawking.
brt3The state commissioner for Information, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, revealed this after the destruction of the buses. According to him, the special court has the power to seize, auction and impound the goods of street traders. He said that section ten (10) of the law of street trading prescribes a five thousand naira (N5,000) fine or three (3) months imprisonment upon conviction.
In his words, “You are hereby urged to desist from this illegal activity because the government would not be blackmailed and would do that which is necessary.
And for the miscreants and hoodlums, “The government and the police command would not allow any act of civil disobedience, and those arrested would be dealt with in accordance with the law. Further arrests would be made as investigation continues,” he warned.
