Again, award-winning woman traffic warden sergeant wins ICDA award

  Her name is Sergent (Mrs.) Oguntade Abiodun, a traffic controller at various points in Ikorodu division. Presently, she is a widow with four or five children to cater for; yet, she is does her work with all the seriousness it deserves.

While working, this reporter has noticed that many times, commercial drivers, cyclists and motorists not only reign abuses on her but sometimes throw pure water at her; yet, she remain unperturbed. She would always smile and continue her work, which lasts up to 10:00pm most times.

Whenever she is on duty, especially around Sabo junction, Ikorodu, you can be sure that the traffic would be light. But when she is not around, it is always traffic madness at the junction.

Perhaps, because of her hard work, various organisations and corporate bodies have been giving her recognitions by way of awards. Among the awards she had received so far include the Lions’ Club and Rotary Club International awards.

The latest of such awards is the Ikorodu Community Development Awards (ICDA). One then wonders why the police authority have refused to promote her despite these accolades.

This newspaper appeals to the hard working and result-oriented Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, to kindly look into her case by way of giving her promotion to the rank of ……

Last April 22, 2017, a foundation, Ikorodu Community Development Award (ICDA) gave her an award for her contribution towards the development of Ikorodu community through her passionate service.

Speaking with Oriwu Sun during the occasion, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, ICDA, Mr. Austin Awolonu, said the purpose of establishing the award was to contribute to the development of Ikorodu through raising more achievers, empowering the youths and celebrating individuals, who have contributed immensely to the development of the division irrespective of whether they are indigenes or non-indigenes.

He said that the award given to the woman traffic officer and Police Sergeant, Oguntade Abiodun, was in recognition of her hardwork. According to him, it was the masses that voted for her through the internet.

He said that the criteria was to vote online and collate results, after which the winner would be announced. She emerged the winner among four officers in her category. Mr. Awolonu also added, “My advice to her is to keep up the good work and avoid being depressed by challenges within or outside her profession.” While also speaking with the reporters, Hon. Princess Olabanji Oba, the moderator and host of the event, said the objective of the foundation was to support the Lagos State government in developing the state and to appreciate true development in Ikorodu community.

While appreciating the award bestowed on her, Oguntade Abiodun, a mother of five said, “I am very happy, grateful and excited for receiving this ICDA Foundation Award. Among the four of us that were nominated, I happened to be the true winner in my category with the help of God and the support of the people of Ikorodu.”

Continuing, she said, “Though, I have received eight different awards from different organisations since my enlistment into the Nigeria Police Force in 2001, the first award was given to me by the Man – O’ war, Mainland Chapters, as “Best Police Officer in Mainland.”

She stated that few months after that, she received the second award from Rotary Club International, Gbagada, Lagos, followed by the Ladybird School award, Bariga and others.

Sergeant Abiodun also explained that within 2006 – 2010, she received three awards before being posted to Ikorodu in 2010. According to her, As-Samadani Islamic society of Nigeria, Ikorodu gave her another award followed by the C.S Church of God award tagged, “Humanity Services Award” in 2015. Other awards in Ikorodu also include the Lion’s Club International award, and now the ICDA Foundation Award, which marks her ninth awards.

Sergeant Oguntade expressed her passion for the job. She intimated that from the support she received from her husband while he was alive, their first son is waiting for call up to serve in the police force.

She was full of praises for the organisers of ICDA award and those who supported and voted for her, including her colleagues in the police force. She wished them God’s rewards always.

Those present during the occasion were, Adeboruwa of Igbogbo, HRM Oba Orimadegun Kasali; Pastor Mike Egwu, TREM Liberty Centre; students of Oriwu Senior Model College, Ikorodu and Elepe Senior High School.

Others include, student of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbogbo, Association of Market Women and Men, Igbogbo, Ota-Ona and Ijede chapters and other invited guests.
