In an exclusive interview granted to Oriwu Sun on the incident, Otunba  Lamina explained that he was unknowingly accosted by nine gunmen on three motorcycles (Okada) while he was driving himself in his Venza car to his hotel on a routine visit around 8p.m on that fateful day.

He said when he got to the hotel, some of his staff told him at the reception that some people had followed him to the hotel on motorcycles and he immediately went outside to see the people, but after some minutes of looking around the vicinity of the hotel, he did not see anybody around and while he turned back to go inside the hotel premises, six armed men jumped down from three motorcycles. which were strategically parked at a corner around the hotel vicinity and started shooting sporadically at him.

Otunba Lamina, who was wearing Jalamia (flowing gown) on that night, said immediately the men started shooting at him, he knew they were on a mission to assassinate him and he immediately decided to fight back.

According to him, while he was attempting to attack the gunmen, they immediately jumped back on their motorcycles when they discovered that none of the shots fired at him hit him and were hurriedly driven away from the area by their accomplice riders, who were on standby throughout the shootout.

Otunba Lamina stated that as the gunmen were leaving the area, they kept shooting to scare away the residents in order to have unhindered escape, and that in the process, a lady, whose father owns a house in the area, was caught by one of the stray bullets in the neck. The lady was however reported to have survived the gunshot.

He revealed further that while the gunmen were attempting to escape from the area, he made a phone call to the police for immediate reinforcement to the area but by the time  the police arrived, the gunmen had already escaped through one of the several routes that lead to the community.

Otunba Lamina explained that both the DPO and the Anti-Robbery Squad from the Sagamu Road Police Station, Ikorodu, visited the scene of the incident around 7a.m the following day after he had reported the incident to them and they were able to pick several shells of empty bullets and also interrogated him.

He also stated that he mentioned the name of Lanre Labinjo, one of the leaders of the Onyabo Vigilante Group in Ikorodu, when he was asked by the police  whom he suspected to have sent the gunmen to attack him because according to him, Lanre had once threatened to kill him.

On whether the police had made any arrest in connection to the attack, Otunba Lamina said nobody has been arrested so far but he was confident that the culprits would be arrested very soon as both the officers of the Sagamu  Police Station and SARS officials in Ipakodo Police Station are working  round the clock to track down the criminals.

On why he was unhurt despite the sporadic shots fired at him by his assailants at close range, he said it was due to God’s protection over him and also because he is a clean and innocent businessman, who had not engaged in any shoddy deal with anyone, and as a result, nobody can take his life except God.

When asked whether the incident would make him to beef up security around himself, Otunba Lamina said he would rather continue to depend on God for his security and protection instead of employing people to secure him because it was God, who did not allow the gunmen to succeed in their evil mission and that it is only Him, who can continue to protect and guard him against such attack.

While commending both the Lagos State government and the police for beefing up security in Odogunyan to curb the menace of cult groups and other criminals, Otunba Lamina urged them to sustain the effort particularly during the forthcoming yuletide to ensure that lives and properties of residents are properly secured against deadly attacks and potential dangers.
