A middle-aged man, who confessed to being a serial kidnapper was on Friday, October 6, 2017 caught red- handed at Baiyeku community, when he attempted to steal some months old baby from the parents’ bedroom after successfully breaking the burglary proof and gaining access into the room.
According to an eye witness, Mr. Isiaka (aka Omo Alhaji), who was at the scene of the incident, said that the man came in through the fence. He said that the mother of the baby was in the sitting room when she heard a noise coming from the bedroom and immediately called on her husband and both of them headed towards the room.
On getting there, he said, they found a man in the room, who was trying to steal their baby and they immediately called out for help. Another resident of the area, who didn’t want his name in print, said that the incident took place around 10a.m when the kidnapper came into the house through the fence and broke the burglary proof to gain entrance.
According to him, the man came with charms, white handkerchief, sweets and cloth that looked like a rope including a poly bag with which he planned to carry the child away.
On further interrogation, the suspect admitted to having come from Ajah through Baiyeku River. The resident also said that the suspect confessed to having been engaging in kidnapping job to feed himself and that was not the first time he was perpetrating such act. He also admitted that this was the first time he came to Baiyeku community.
Meanwhile, some angry youths and residents, who were at the scene of the incident, were reported to have dealt brutally with the suspect before the intervention of the community leaders and the Police. He was later whisked away by the Police. However, the youths have sounded a note of warning that they would take laws into their own hands if justice is not seen to be done by the Police.
Efforts made to speak with the parents of the baby by our reporter proved abortive on the grounds that they were protecting the image of their baby and theirs too. Attempts made also to speak with the suspect was unsuccessful as the Police prevented him from granting interviews.
