Olorunsogo community wants government’s support to complete second phase drainage project

One of the leaders of Olorunsogo community in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Rev. M. D. Olu Onabanjo, has called on the Lagos State Government to render support to the community towards the completion of its second phase drainage project, which is estimated to cost about Thirteen Million Naira (N13million).

In an interview with Oriwu Sun in Ikorodu recently, Rev. Onabanjo disclosed that the problem being faced by the community as a result of erosion made the Community Development Association (CDA) to resort to the construction of drainage systems to safeguard the lives and properties of residents.

According to him, there were periods when the residents had to contend with rescuing school children, who were carried away by flood as well as salvaging properties of residents. Reverend Onabanjo said such situations had forced many residents to relocate after losing some of their valuable properties to flood.

While stating that the construction of the drainages were in phases, the community leader explained that the first phase, which was done in 2015, gulped about Sixteen Million Naira (N16million) and was single handedly financed by one street, James Daniel street. Speaking further, he said that the second phase of the project, which is still ongoing, is being financed by the Olorunsogo CDA due to the non-challant attitude of the residents of the street (Ajisebiara Mecca), where the drainage is being constructed.

Onabanjo said the CDA decided to take up the responsibility of the project because of the impact of the erosion on the entire Olorunsogo community. He disclosed that the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira, received by the community from the Lagos State Government as compensation for embarking on the first phase of the project, encouraged them to commence the second stage. The leader, therefore, commended Hon. S.O.B. Agunbiade, Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly and other residents of the community, who have made financial contributions towards the project.

He appealed to the Lagos State Government for financial support to enable the community to meet up with the April completion date before the commencement of the rainy season and for the road to be graded by the Council.

Rev. Onabanjo also sought further assistance from both Ikorodu Local Government and Lagos State Government for the remaining two phases of the project, which would commence after the completion of the second phase.
