Legislators, white-cap chiefs, laud Tutor-General Solarin at ceremony

The Honourable representing Eti-Osa constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Kazeem Alimi, has stated that there is a need to ensure that Nigerian culture particularly the Yoruba culture, do not go into extinction.

Speaking during the “Lagos at 50” anniversary, which was organized by Education District III, held at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Banquet Hall, Onikan, Lagos on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, Hon. Kazeem did not fail to express his satisfaction at the impressive turn-out and cultural performances of the students, who participated in the talents hunt competition and the show-casing of Lagos cultural heritage.

He also advised the students at the event to be hardworking and to also embrace discipline if they want to become good leaders of tomorrow. Hon Segun Olulade also buttressed his colleagues’ points and added that in order to protect Yoruba cultural heritage, the Lagos State House of Assembly had chosen every Thursday as a vernacular day for its session.

He said that a bold step had also been taken, which had made the Yoruba language to be recognized at Embassies.  The Legislator, who represents Epe constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, commended the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District III, Barrister (Mrs.) Margaret Solarin and the teachers under the district for imparting qualitative education in their students and best moral and cultural values.

In her brief remarks, the Chairperson, Civil Service Commission, Lagos State, Mrs. Taiwo A. Oyemade, attributed the successes being recorded in the education sector to the good and timely intervention of the Lagos State Governor. She stated that based on the achievements of the state for a period of fifty years, the golden jubilee is worthy of celebration by all sectors of the state.

The Obanikoro of Lagos, High Chief Ajayi Bembe, who led other white-cap chiefs of Lagos to the event, lauded the cultural display and other talented performances showcased at the event. He commended Mrs. Margaret Solarin for her good leadership and administrative qualities.

Chief Ajayi Bembe, who was reflecting the mind of Oba of Lagos, also praised the successive Governors in Lagos State, noting that each of them had brought greater achievements to the state in her fifty years of existence. He wished Governor Ambode more successful tenure in office.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of the District, Mrs. Margaret Solarin, commended Governor Ambode for his huge investment in the education sector within two years in office. She stated that renovation of public schools in the state had been done by the Governor while empowerment of teachers had become a normal routine. She also praised the Governor for providing the opportunity for  all round best education to public school students.

According to her, the Thursday event was the grand finale of the celebration, which had commenced two days earlier. She said that through the event, Lagos cultural heritage and values had once again been brought to the fore.

For those students that would emerge winners at the district level, they would be transferred to the state level for more success to be attained for the district. The activities of the day included cultural display from various schools under the district.

There were also talented dancers of Fuji, Apala, Hip-hop and Ewi presentation, showering of praises and Boat regatta. The winners later emerged and their certificates of participation and award plaques were presented to them by dignitaries at the event.

While Government Technical College, Odo-Mola, Epe, won the first position in science exhibition, Government Secondary School, Tarkwa Bay, won the first position in arts and crafts exhibition. Lagos State Junior College, Badore won the first position in talent hunt.

Meanwhile, Hon. Sola Giwa, who represents Lagos Island in the LSHA, attributed the achievements of the executive arm of government to the cordial relationship that exists between the two. He wished the state more developments ahead.

Dignitaries that graced the event included, Director, Co-curricular, Science and Technology, Mr. Kamorudeen Sanusi; Director, Administration and Human Resources, Education District III, Mrs. Odunsi Titus Aderonke; Principal Education Officer, Education District III, Mr. Olakunle Da-Silva; Director, School administration, District III, Dr. Raji Mudashiru, amongst other educationists and notable stakeholders in Lagos State.
