Ikorodus fly to the US with Oba Shotobi for his January 30, award; a demonstration of confidence in the monarch

If anyone is still in doubt about the popularity and acceptance of His Royal Majesty, Alaiyeluwa  Oba (Engr.) Kabir Adewale Shotobi, the Ayangbure of Ikorodu by his people, that one should have been to North Carolina USA to see forty (40) Ikorodu indigenes who flew to US with the king and twenty (20) others who flew in from different parts of America to witness the January 30, 2016 Vanguard Award to Oba Shotobi by Black American Civil Rights Activists.

To say that Oba Kabir Shotobi is greatly loved appreciated and very popular among his people is therefore no exaggeration. Otherwise how could forty (40) people in these austere times in Nigeria spend about one million Naira each to accompany the Kabiyesi to receive an award abroad?

If the trip was a free one for all, paid by the Kabiyesi, then one would expect such a number of people. But that was not the case, as each of these forty (40) men and women paid their to and return flight fares of more than a million Naira paid for their posh hotel accommodations and feeding plus transport for ten days to support their King. It was no means demonstration of confidence in the monarch.

More than sixty (60) Ikorodu indigenes and other Nigerians were at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum Greensboro AT&T University to witness the Vanguard Award bestowed on Oba Shotobi during which his statue was unveiled in the multi-million dollar museum.

They were also present at the  Mariot International Hotel, Greensboro, where Kabiyesi installed black American multi-millionaire, Dr. Robert Brown with a chieftaincy title. Dressed in full Yoruba attires, Ikorodu made, the hotel venue look as if it was the new ultra-modern Ayangbure Palace in Ikorodu.

During this trip, the kabiyesi, his wife, Lika and three kitchen cabinet members, – Monzor Olowosago, Kaoli Olusanya and Ayodele Elesho stayed at the palatial residence of Dr. Brown while others lodged in hotel.

Dr. Brown provided shuttle busses which conveyed the Nigerians from their hotels to Dr. Brown’s residence.

One of the highlights of the trip was the chieftaincy installation of Dr. Brown. The Black American was amazed when he got to the hotel venue of the installation as he saw the rich cultural values of Ikorodu Kingdom on display, namely – the chieftaincy costumes of the Nigerians, the fine details of their tradition, etc. No wonder he treasured the honour given to him.

On his part, Kabiyesi was grateful every day to the patriotic Ikorodu sons and daughters who sacrificed their time, energy and resources to show solidarity with him and to his American host. These photos show faces of some of these Nigerians at home and abroad who made the trip and events. Their faces will remain etched in the memory of Kabiyesi Shotobi’s for life.

As for those who still doubt or still oppose Oba Shotobi candidature on the throne, events such as this one will show the need to sheath the sword and mend fences. This king is no doubt recognised even abroad and it is only God that would have made this possible.
