The Lagos State Civil Service Senior Model College, Igbogbo, on Wednesday July 13, 2016, held a valedictory service and award ceremony to celebrate the 2015/2016 senior secondary school graduating students.
During the two in one event held at the school hall, which also featured a prize giving ceremony in recognition of the academic performance of the thirty five graduating students and others, the Principal of the school, Rev. Adekunle Ajose (JP), was invited to present his welcome address.
In his address, the Principal expressed great joy at the occasion for the graduand and their parents while also thanking the officials of the Education District II and other guests for honouring the invitation. According to him, the lucky graduands, during their stay in the school, were rigorously prepared and trained academically, morally and spiritually for future challenges.
He, therefore, urged them to always strive to be good ambassadors of the school and their respective families wherever they find themselves. Reverend Ajose also advised them to accept God with all their hearts and always seek His divine direction in all their dealings.
He also told those who would gain admission this year into higher institutions to avoid bad company, which could lead them to cultism and other heinous acts in order to graduate with good grades.
Speaking further, the Principal told them to learn to be respectful and to cherish and appreciate the relationship and friendship they have cultivated among themselves while in the school. In his view, they should see themselves as brothers and sisters and make sacrifices for one another for the sake of their alma mata.
In concluding his speech, he praised the members of staff, who nurtured and developed the students academically, and their parents, who ensured regular payments of their school fees despite the excruciating economic condition of the country.
The Principal also prayed that by the time the SSCE results would be released, both the parents and the school shall have the cause to smile over the performance of the graduands.
The chairman of the occasions, Hon. Nurudeen Solaja, representing Ikorodu constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly in his own brief address, which was presented by Mr. S.A. Odusote, Head of Department of Languages, Lagos State Civil Service Model College, Igbogbo, congratulated the graduands and wished them more success in their future endeavours.
He advised the graduands to cultivate the habit of good relationship with their lecturers while in higher institution for them to do well in their courses. Hon. Solaja also explained that since his election, he has been doing his best to touch the lives of his constituents, particularly in the area of education, where he had given out GCE forms and computers to students.
Solaja said he plans to increase the number of the computers he is given out to students in the constituency from three to five and the GCE forms to the students of the school from four to ten very soon.
In her own speech, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District II, Mrs. Titilayo Margaret Solarin, delivered by Mrs. F.A. Odupitan, Director, School Services, Education District II, she said that anybody can succeed in life irrespective of who they are and where they come from.
In her explanation, most of the successful people in the world had at one time or the other been tagged as failures by their teachers and the society. But they were able to become what they are today because of their burning desire to succeed in life and because their parents did not give up on them.
She, therefore, charged the graduands and other students to be focused and dedicated to their studies, not allowing anybody or anything to discourage them from reaching their goals in life.
The Tutor-General advised the parents not to give up on their children irrespective of their deficiency but rather, rally round them and show them love and support.
There were also goodwill messages at the event from Mrs. M. S. Adelegan, Principal, Junior Civil Service Model College, Igbogbo and Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Bashorun, who was represented by Hon. Taiwo Orenuga, the immediate past Executive Secretary, Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA.
There was also a brief career talk on accounting profession by Mr. Adewuyi Moshood, official of the Audit Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Finance, who was represented by Mr. Olaitan O. Patrick. The valedictory speech was presented by the Senior Girl of the outgoing set, Miss Purity Araronu. Cultural dance and poem recitation followed suit.
There was also a brief prayer session for the graduands and their parents by the duo of Rev. Abiodun Ogunjimi, Presbyterian, Methodist Church of Nigeria, Igbogbo Circuit, and Alhaji Nurudeen Owoyele, Imam of Olorunosebi Mosque, Oriokuta, Imota. There was short exhortation by Mr. D.O. Oyebanji, Director, School Administration, Education District II.
There was also presentation of Prizes and awards to the graduands and other students of the school in recognition of their academic performance. The parents and staff were also not left out in recognition of their contribution to the development of the school. The graduands also doled out gifts to their teachers to appreciate them.
Meanwhile, in a short interview with Oriwu Sun, the outgoing Head girl of the school, Miss Purity Araronu, said that she felt happy and fulfilled to have successfully completed her secondary school education. She said that she was happy to be graduating from the school despite challenges, stating that she and her colleagues had gained a lot academically, spiritually and morally to face the future with hope and confidence.
She thanked her parents and teachers for their contributions and supports, which she described as the pillars of her education, Purity prayed that God should continue to bless them.
To other students, she urged them to continue to remain focused and committed to their studies in order to be worthy of the honour that was bestowed on her and other graduands.
Also, while speaking with Oriwu Sun, Mr. Oluwaseun I. Adekoya, Deputy Registrar, Lagos State Polytechnic, who is the father of the outgoing Head Boy, expressed his joy over the successful completion of secondary school by his son. He said that he was very happy to be associated with the school because of its academic excellence.
He thanked the school management for awarding him the Best Caring Parent of the Year. Mr. Adekoya urged other parents to give adequate attention to the growth and development of their children so that they could become successful and useful to them in future.
To the graduating students, he advised them to continue to develop themselves morally and computer wise as these would help them in handling most of the tasks they would face in the course of their studies.
