EPIDEMIC LOOMS ON OGUNSHI-SABO ROAD! …Dumping of refuse worries residents, want government intervention

The residents of Ikorodu and passersby along Ogunshi-Sabo road have called on both the local and state governments to come to their rescue and put a stop to the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, which has become a source of offensive odour and environmental pollution to the residents and passerby alike.

While expressing their concerns to Oriwu Sun recently during investigation, some of the residents, who did not want their names in print said that the carelessness of residents, shop-owners and passersby in the area contributed to the heaps of refuse, which have become a nightmare because of the offensive odour emanating from there.

They said that the several heaps of refuse scattered all over the place starting from the beginning of Sabo – Ogunshi road at the Sabo roundabout down to the end of the road, which connects Alhaji Street, is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

A source also told Oriwu Sun that when it rains, some of the wastes find their way into the drainages along the road and cause blockage, which usually leads to flooding on the road.

Another resident, Mr. Isaiah Ilori, who spoke to Oriwu Sun said that many residents were fond of dumping their refuse across the road, a habit he said was responsible for the environmental pollution in the area.

The fridge repairer and seller also said that the residents have written several petitions to the local government but they have not received any positive reply. Mrs. Kudirat Ademoye, a resident also bemoaned their situation stating that she usually felt bad when passing through the place whenever she closed from work. Ademoye said that the situation becomes worse when it rains and called on the government to intervene and find solution to it.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Adegbola Osho, a resident said that the bad condition of the road as a result of the dumping of the refuse has caused several accidents. Some of which she witnessed. According to her because of the blocked drainages, the water would cause flood during rains and continuous erosion would also lead to potholes.

Commending Governor Ambode for the good work he has done, Adegbola Osho said that the last Saturday of the month environmental sanitation helped them a lot until it was cancelled by the Governor. She appealed to him to do everything to bring it back.

The residents of Ogunshi have appealed to the government to support them, saying that they should not neglect them but help them find solution to their problem.

Moreover he commend Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the good work he has been doing in Lagos State.

Adding that the last Saturday of the month environmental sanitation helped them a lot until it got cancel by the governor “Thursday environmental sanitation is individual, because atimes people don’t really observe it, they just stay in their houses till 10:00a.m, after the sanitation is over then you will see them coming out of their houses, so we would appreciate it if governor Ambode bring Saturday environmental sanitation back for us” He said.

The residents of Ogunshi Sabo ask for the government support, saying they should not neglect them, but help them find solution to their problem, that they would be grateful if the local government reply positively to their request.
