When it comes to formulating innovative ideas and galvanising action, it is clear that the older generations have much to learn from us young people. We are not apathetic or dis-engaged; we are simply savvy enough to know that they are not listening to us.
From creating start-ups to igniting revolutions, young people have been toppling the old structures and processes that govern our world. Just imagine what solutions might be found if young people are given the space and encouragement to participate and lead.”
In 1999, in its resolution 54/120, the General Assembly declared August 12 International Youth Day, which gives an opportunity to celebrate young peoples’ views and initiatives.
Celebrations at the United Nations Headquarters and around the world will recognize the importance of youth efforts, collaboration and participation in the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, and in particular the role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable production and consumption.
Events to celebrate International Youth Day 2016 will take place all over the world.
The theme of the 2016 International Youth Day is “The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Production and Consumption”.
This year would portray a UN-Like general assembly of youth leaders from various network and societies in Nigeria who would deliberate in a parliamentarian format on the theme; whereas resolutions and recommendation would be forwarded to the Federal Government for subsequent implementation or advocacy.
Hence we humbly request your presence as a young change agent to the general assembly while elaborating on the on the theme.
This year’s Day is about achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It focuses on the leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable production and consumption.
This year’s theme places an emphasis on a cross-sectoral approach to sustainability and the vast social, political, economic and environmental inter-linkages needed to achieve it.
Having faced difficulties in the build-up to the preparations of this event; we were at first discouraged by the loss of an important member of the planning committee, but we where hitherto encouraged to continue with the event as there is no better way to honor our friend and dear brother but by making this event a success and making Nigeria a better place to live.
Please Kindly come with a written presentation not less than 500 words on the theme or send it via mail to eyparliament@gmail.com
