12 year-old building collapse at Alhaji Street

The Lagos State Building and Control Agency (LASBCA) has cordoned off a 12 year old building, which was allegedly fell by thunder during a rain storm at Ikorodu last October.

The building, which was located at No. 49, Cele Alhaji Street, Aga, Ikorodu, whose owner, according to a source, resides abroad, has been abandoned for the past twelve years.

The incident, which occurred at the early hours of that day, registered no casualties as the occupants of the building were said not to be around.

However, a member of Temiloluwa Emmanuel Church of Christ located beside the building, who witnessed the incident, told Oriwu Sun that she and other female members of the church were doing some cleaning after a heavy strike of thunder when the incident happened.

In her words, “We had our church anniversary on Saturday and the next day, which was Sunday, while we were cleaning up the building because the cooking was done at the church, it started heavily and a heavy thunder struck, and we felt it was just a normal thing. But when it happened a second time, to our greatest surprise, we saw the building crumbling. We thank God that nobody was in the building at that time.”

While speaking to Oriwu Sun, a Senior Pastor of the church, who did not disclose his name, stated thus: “This house had been abandoned for some years. The owner of the house stays abroad and sends money to his brother, who stays in Nigeria for the building project but unfortunately, his brother  abandoned the house for over twelve years. Some Engineers also said the building materials used for the building were not solid.”

Meanwhile, officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) were reported to have visited the scene of the incident and carried out the necessary inspections.

However, it was learnt that they ejected the occupants of the building and cordoned it off to prevent unwanted intrusion.
